Summer Quarter: June 21 - July 26, 2009 (five weeks)
In-depth Study of the Book of Nahum - At first glance, the little prophetic book of Nahum does not appear to be a good fit in the Old Testament—it gleefully an-nounces the fall of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Em-pire, which had terrorized Israel and Judah for three centu-ries (ca. 900-612 B.C.). However, one can glean much about God’s attributes of mercy and judgment from this little book. We will do a verse by verse study of this book, as well as study the historical background of the period (7th century B.C.). Taught by Mark Chavalas 9:00 to 10:10 am in room 212/218.
Christian Faith Expressed in the Music of the Great Christian Composers - Many of the great com-posers expressed their faith through the music they com-posed. Musical examples from composers like Bach, Haydn, and Handel will be presented in class to illustrate. These examples, plus selections for outside of class will be used as springboards for devotional readings during the week. A brief biography for each composer will be given—outlining their life and times—with an emphasis on what is known about their spiritual pilgrimage. Taught by David Townsend 9:00 to 10:10 am in room 214.
What Did Jesus Do?: Studies in the Book of Mark continued - By now we’ve all heard the familiar encour-agement to ask, “What Would Jesus Do?”, but sometimes we need to get even more basic and ask, “What DID Jesus Do?” In this class we will witness Jesus healing the sick, see him casting out demons, watch as he confronts the reli-gious leaders of the day, and listen as he answers hard ques-tions and speaks as no one else ever did! Taught by Andrew LeCleir 9:00 to 10:10 am in room 216.
