Class Description
FC 402 Christian Faith Expressed in the Music of the Great Christian Composers, Part 2
Many of the great composers expressed their faith through the music they composed for the church and for the secular arena. Musical examples will be presented in class from the music of the early church through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the present day, including Mozart, Beethoven, Bruckner, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. These will be used to illustrate how faith (and struggling with faith) was expressed in their music. These examples, plus recommended listening selections for outside of class will be used as springboards for devotional readings during the week. A brief biography for each composer will be given—outlining their life and times—with an emphasis on what is known about their spiritual pilgrimage. Taught by David Townsend.
A Note Regarding Audio Download
On many computers the audio will begin to play automatically when you click on the Audio link. On others it may be necessary to right click and then choose "Save Target As.." This will allow you to save the audio file on your computer and then play it using any program that plays audio files. (On an Apple the procedure is similar, except that instead of right clicking you "control click" and then save it to your computer.)
